FairPlay’s warning about a threat to potato farmers from cheap imports has been welcomed and endorsed by the South African potato industry.
Potatoes South Africa (PSA) added the industry’s concern because existing anti-dumping duties had lapsed due to the regulator’s failure to renew them.
PSA chief executive Willie Jacobs said the industry faced a loss of jobs and business closures resulting from increased volumes of below-cost frozen French fries from the Netherlands and Belgium.
No word yet on a renewed application to get those anti-dumping duties back in place.
