Chicken is cheapest

Chicken has regained its rightful place as South Africa’s most affordable meat protein.

The price comparisons are contained in the Key Market Signals statistics for the fourth quarter of last year, produced by the SA Poultry Association (SAPA).

For some months last year pork was cheaper than chicken at producer level. Then pork prices rose steeply in November and December, while chicken producer price increases were modest.

The result was that, for the fourth quarter of 2022, chicken producer prices averaged R30.62/kg, while pork cost an average of R34.31/kg.

Eggs remain the cheapest form of solid protein, and prices dropped at the end of last year. Producer prices for eggs averaged R23.21/kg (R17.36/dozen) in the fourth quarter.
