It’s worth looking once again at the market share that chicken imports have built up in South Africa.
According to a graphic in the latest results announcement by Astral Foods, market share in the six months to March this year was:
– Imports: 26%
– Astral Foods: 19%
– RCL Foods: 14%
– Country Bird Holdings: 7%
– Sovereign Foods: 6%
– Daybreak: 5%
– Grain Fields Chickens: 4%
– Chubby Chick: 3%
– Other: 16%
That’s a fairly unconcentrated spread, with the two largest firms having a combined share of less than half of the market, while imports have a bigger share than any local chicken producer.
