Here’s a worthy initiative to help feed South Africa’s undernourished children.
Early childhood development centres across South Africa will receive more than half a million rand’s worth of nutritious meals, thanks to a recent partnership between margarine brand Rama and supermarket group Spar.
Earlier this year, Rama committed to donate a meal to a child in need for every brick of Rama margarine purchased from Spar. The initiative raised over R600 000, which will be used by the Do More Foundation to ensure that hundreds of children under the age of five get a nutritious meal daily.
The Do More Foundation works in collaborative partnerships with key public and private stakeholders to meet the needs of young children. More than a quarter of South African children under the age of five suffer from stunting, which is caused by malnutrition and affects them mentally and physically for the rest of their lives. Iris Naidoo, partnership manager at the foundation, said it currently supported 1 015 early childhood development programmes across South Africa.
“In the wake of the devastating floods, securing consistent nutritious meals for our KZN-based centres has become a key priority, and this donation will go a long way to help us feed, not just the children, but the community that serves them,” she said.
