Brazil, the world’s largest poultry exporter and one of the few countries free of bird flu, is heading for record sales this year. It also expects strong sales next year.
Exports for the first 10 months of 2023 were 4.3 million tons, poultry industry group ABPA told Reuters, and the annual total should exceed 5 million tons.
China was Brazil’s biggest export destination, with sales up 31% on the first 10 months of 2022. Saudi Arabia was second, up 5%, and South Africa third. Brazil’s chicken meat sales to South Africa this year have increased by 25% to 286 000 metric tons.
Bird flu has been detected in wild birds in Brazil, but not so far in commercial poultry flocks. Neighbouring countries have had bird flu outbreaks resulting in export bans, which Brazil has so far escaped.
