South Africa has been struck by its first incident of avian influenza since the devastating outbreak of 2017.
So far it is confined to a commercial layer flock near Johannesburg. The farm has been quarantined and control measures implemented.
The poultry industry is on high alert. The situation is being managed by the SA Poultry Association (SAPA) on behalf of the industry, and by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD).
They are doing their utmost to prevent a wider outbreak, and are applying the lessons learned in 2017. FairPlay wishes them well in their endeavours.
