Retail chicken prices are going up much faster than producer prices. That interesting insight comes from the latest Key Market Signals document produced by the SA Poultry Association.
Between 2019 and 2020, average producer prices went up from R22.89/kg to R23.52/kg. That’s an increase of 2.75%.
Over the same period, average retail prices rose from R32.94/kg in 2019 to R35.58/kg in 2020. That’s 8% – three times the producer price increase.
Someone’s making big profits, and it’s not the farmers.
