400 jobs regained

DURBAN: The Food and Allied Workers Union (Fawu) said it was happy that about 400 workers who had been retrenched have since been reinstated by RCL Foods, the holding company for Rainbow Chickens.

“There were about 600 workers who were retrenched, but about 400 are now back at work,” said Fawu KZN organiser Japhta Malinga. He said negotiations with the employers were continuing and that they had agreed to halt retrenchments.

RCL Foods said it was currently dismantling facilities aspart of its 2007 decision to downsize its Hammarsdale operation, which included selling a number of farms. The company noted that the dismantling of buildings was limited to KZN.

The company had been facing pressure asa results of chickens being imported into South Africa for sale at lower prices than the local product.
