A South African negotiating team is in the United States, hoping to negotiate a trade deal that lowers US import tariffs from the current 30%. South African poultry producers are waiting to see what their industry will have to sacrifice to get any agreement with the Trump administration.
There has been no indication yet that the US will accept South Africa’s second offer, after it rejected the first effort.
The South African offer includes a 72 000-tonne annual quota of US chicken imports free of the anti-dumping duties which should apply. As it did 10 years ago, the South African government is putting the poultry industry at risk in order to secure benefits for other industries.
