Record smashed in Mandela Day soup challenge

We reported last month on the challenge to produce 67 000 litres of soup for the poor to mark Nelson Mandela Day.

Well, Chefs with Compassion not only succeeded for the third successive year in rallying hotels, restaurants, companies and individual cooks to the cause, they exceeded the target by some margin.

The 2022 total was a record 94 359 litres, almost 17 000 litres more than the 2020 record. The result was that nutrient-rich soup reached some 377 436 people in seven South African provinces. It is the biggest annual community cooking initiative in South Africa.

This worthwhile project has been supported by South African poultry producers, who have contributed generous amounts of chicken meat and eggs to the soup makers.
