“This is not protection,” FairPlay founder Francois Baird said in an interview with Moneyweb.
The anti-dumping duties on dumped chicken imports against Brazil and four European Union countries followed a thorough investigation by the International Trade Administration Commission (Itac). The duties applied “only to specific companies that have been found guilty of breaking the rules,” he said.
“These are companies that have been found guilty of transgressions. It is therefore not the industry being protected against fair competition from all importers.”
Asked about the price impact, Baird said the analysis by Genesis Analytics had found that there would be no significant impact on retail price of chicken.
The drivers of chicken prices were load shedding and rising input costs such as the international price of maize.
“Anti-dumping duties are not really going to make any impact on price” he said.
