The Association of Meat Importers and Exporters (AMIE) CEO Paul Matthew made headlines for his “support” for the removal of VAT from chicken.
Unless we misheard, not once did he say that “VAT-free chicken” was a FairPlay campaign, supported by the SA Poultry Association, or that chicken importers are late-comers to a call FairPlay first made in 2018.
VAT-free chicken would be targeted at lower-income households, bringing immediate relief to people struggling to feed their families as food prices rise.
