Is South Africa prepared for the next bird flu outbreak?

FairPlay hosted this webinar on 16 July 2026.

A major bird flu outbreak is a threat not just to the poultry industry, but to the national and regional economies. The last such outbreak in 2023 cost the poultry industry more than R9 billion. Millions of chickens were slaughtered, large poultry producers suffered huge losses many smaller producers went out of business, and thousands of jobs were lost.

Is another outbreak inevitable? If so, how well prepared is South Africa for this disaster? What has been done so far, and what still needs to be done? What can the government and the poultry industry learn from the vaccination campaign against foot and mouth disease in cattle?
