Electricity tariffs going up

In December 2023, the national electricity utility Eskom survived a court challenge to the 12.74% increase planned for this year, following a tariff rise of 18.65% in 2023.

The latest increases will hit Eskom’s direct customers in April and municipal customers in July.

Higher prices will be a further incentive for farmers and businesses to install their own electricity generators. Many have turned to alternative sources of energy because of Eskom’s almost daily power cuts.
