South Africa is not alone in using “buy local” campaigns to stimulate local production, create local jobs and revitalise economic growth. It is happening all over the world, as a reaction to the economic devastation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The government’s “buy local” campaign will include many locally made products, not just chicken. Poultry is one of 42 products that have been identified for a “buy local” priority.
In addition to encouraging South Africans to buy local chicken, the poultry master plan envisages an instruction to government departments and state owned enterprises to use local poultry for their catering. This instruction is still awaited.
